Bodrum Castle (Castle of St Peter or Petronium) was built by the Knights of St John between 1406 and 1522 on a rocky peninsula between two harbors. Stones from the Mausoleum, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, were reused in its construction. The castle’s walls are double-layered on most sides, with seven gates leading inside and coats of arms featuring crucifixes, dragons, and lions.
The castle features 14 cisterns including the chapel basement, a pillbox, drawbridge, watchtower, and the tughra of Sultan Mahmut II. It was used as a prison in the late 19th century, during which a Turkish bath was added. Today, it functions as the Museum of Underwater Archaeology.
